About Maria Geib
I am a first generation American of Danish and Serbian descent. I was born in Chicago, but spent most of my formative years in Los Angeles. During my childhood, I was able to travel extensively throughout Europe, and attended a Danish middle school and a cooking school. Upon graduation from high school, I attended UC Berkeley for my undergraduate studies and UCLA for my graduate work, attaining supplementary BCLAD and GATE certifications. My first year teaching was in 2002 in Lennox teaching 7th grade English Language Arts, Social Studies, and ELD. I then moved from teaching in Lennox to teaching in Ventura.
When I first arrived in Ventura, I was a long term substitute teacher at schools including: Montalvo (3rd dual immersion), Anacapa (6th Math/Social Studies), Foothill (Honors English 10th and AP English seniors) and Will Rogers (2/3 combo in Spanish). Substituting is an excellent way to get to know different schools, styles of teaching, and broaden your curricular horizons.
I have worked at several different schools in Ventura. They include Montalvo (4th dual immersion), Lincoln (4th and 4/5 combo, 5th), ATLAS(4th and 5th), District office (Lesson Design specialist shared with Mr. Wulff), DATA (6th Language Arts/Social Studies) and currently J. Serra (3rd).
Every school has helped me become a better teacher and provided me with new opportunities, ranging from teaching migrant students to focusing on the arts, to integrating VTS strategies, project based learning and integrating technology. The VEP program is another opportunity for teachers to access grants and funding for their classrooms. I am fortunate to work where I do and have excellent colleagues.
I have two daughters, Julia (3rd grade) and Elizabeth (kindergarten) who are students in Ventura Unified. I also have a husband who teaches high school at Foothill Technology; it is fulfilling to discover that several of my former students are now in his classes.
Here are some of my personal likes:
Coffee- There is something glorious about a hot cup of coffee in the morning. Iced coffee in the afternoons isn't bad, either.
Dark chocolate- the darker, the better.
Art (appreciation and creation)- I routinely visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Getty.
Flowers/plants-The plants I selected for the classroom are based on a NASA research study used to clean air in space stations. My personal favorite flower is the orchid. Not only are they gorgeous to behold, but their blossoms last for months!
