What's Happening in Room 8:
Language Arts: Reading multiple source materials and annotating news articles
Writing multi-paragraph opinion essays integrating and citing source materials:
"Should Recess Be Shortened?"
Read Aloud: Who Would Win? series- this is to inspire students to read more non-fiction
Math: Analyzing tables and graphs, converting data into pictographs, tape diagrams, tally marks, bar graphs, and circle graphs. We did a beginning level lesson with our first grade little buddies and it was fantastic!
Then students created their own questions and 5 options, had each student in the class select an option, and they made 4 graphs based on their individualized data.
Physical Education: Mrs. Geib is the WINNER of $3,000 from VEP for building core strength for J. Serra students!
Country Western Hoe Down dance practice on Mondays! Next up...teaching the Virginia Reel and the Two Step
Google Slide project on national landmarks, students must compare/contrast one landmark with another and find out how to get to that landmark from Ventura either by bus, train, car, or plane. They need to estimate the cost and distance and add the information to their Google Slides.
Students are also creating a 3D artifact in any medium they choose to depict their national landmark-play dough, yarn, clay, wooden dowels, paint, the more creative, the better!
Students will also learn about civic responsibility via this recent news article
What does it mean to be a local citizen? What does it mean to be a global citizen? How can we be both?
Kids Make A Difference
Art: make an individualized "Golconda" a la Magritte; students will find a digital image or draw their own, create it in 3 different sizes, and have that 'raining' down after they design a series of buildings and the background using watercolor, Sharpie and crayon.
Science: insect adaptations project...more to come!
Engineering Friday: create ziplines for your Lego figures using cups, fishing wire, string, tape, and straw!
